In case of an outbreak of Marburg virus (as in September 2024 in Rwanda), imported cases cannot be ruled out. Institutes and laboratories manipulating samples from patients suspected of having viral hemorrhagic fever must be aware of the significant biological risks posed to staff, public health, and the environment.
Due to the high-risk profile of the Marburg virus, intentional manipulation under the legislation governing contained use is not permitted in Belgium, as there are no available level 4 containment facilities.
For the handling of patient samples suspected of Marburg virus infection in the context of patient care, the SBB refers to the regulations on occupational safety – health of workers (competent authority: FPS Employment, Labour, and Social Dialogue) and the establishment's prevention advisor.
